Canyon, TX-The third-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's
volleyball team opened play at the NCAA II Elite Eight with a convincing
3-0 win over New Haven today. The Seasiders scored the first 12 points
of the match enroute to a 30-10, 30-15, 30-18 victory over the 34-6
Chargers, stopping a 29-match winning streak for the Northeast Region
champs.
BYU-Hawaii, now 25-2 for the season, trailed only at 5-3 in the second
game and was in control throughout the match. Junior middle blocker
Ashley Moeai pounded 21 kills in an unstoppable performance for the
Seasiders. Moeai committed just two hitting errors in 28 attempts for
an outstanding .679 hitting percentage. Moeai also put up five blocks
to lead the Seasiders. As a team BYU-Hawaii outhit New Haven .385 to
negative .010 and totaled 51 kills to just 22 for the Chargers.
National Freshman of the Year Yu Chuan Weng knocked down 12 kills for
BYU-Hawaii and fellow freshman All-American Chun Yi Lin nailed seven
kills while hitting .538. Freshman Mariah Goselin put away five kills
in eight attempts with no errors for a .625 hitting percentage.
Senior Leiau Meatoga and sophomore Kaala Lo were the match digs leaders
with ten apiece and Lo put up 38 assists for BYU-Hawaii. Meatoga and
Moeai each served two of the Seasiders seven aces. BYU-Hawaii did not
allow the Chargers a single ace in the match.
The Seasiders will take on the winner of today's match between Northern
Colorado and Tampa in tomorrow's semifinal at 5:00 pm CST.
