Career Advancement Plan (CAP)

BACKGROUND

To help Brigham Young University Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center fulfill their roles in the growing worldwide Church, the BYU Hawaii Board of Trustees has established and encouraged the implementation of five university goals to better educate and prepare students: (1) Intensify efforts to fulfill the university's prophetic mission related to educating students from Pacific and Asian nations; (2) Strengthen curriculum to better prepare students to be leaders who contribute to the peace and prosperity of their families, the Church, and their communities; (3) Integrate experiences of students working at the Polynesian Cultural Center into the overall mentored-learning environment of the university; (4) Foster return-ability among international students, particularly from the Pacific and Asian regions, to prepare leaders of integrity for all the world; and (5) Establish peace---one relationship at a time----by building on the university's success as a model of harmony amidst cultural diversity.

Section Four (4) lists eight objectives that the university will accomplish to achieve the stated goal, "foster return-ability". One of the eight objectives is to establish a required career plan for every degree seeking student.


PREMISE OF THE CAREER ADVANCEMENT PLAN (CAP)

The BYU Hawaii CAP is structured around the National Career Development Guidelines, authorized by the US Department of Education in 1989 but revised in 2003 to include post-secondary students in the target audience. Instituted to provide career development information that leads to informed career decision-making and lifelong learning, the Guidelines framework is organized into three domains (personal/social development, educational achievement/lifelong learning, and career management), goals that support those domains, and indicators of mastery under each goal. The indicators are further grouped by learning stage (knowledge, application, reflection).

HOW THE PLAN WORKS

  1. The Career Advancement Plan (CAP) is a companion tool to the Major Academic Plan (MAP). The CAP requirements are stored in the student's MyBYUH page in the "To Do" checklist section. By clicking on the requirement, the student can view a complete description of the activity required, instructions on how to accomplish it, and where to access the necessary information. If the student has not completed the task by the assigned due date, a warning notice will post to that MyBYUH page.
  2. The Career Center staff oversees the CAP process and checks and records activity completion. If a student has questions about the CAP, please contact a Career Center advisor.
  3. As students complete the various assigned tasks, documents and records that are part of the tasks should then be stored in the student's YCareers document storage file.
