English as an International Language (EIL)
University Policy on English Language Testing 9/22/2004
| The EIL Department at BYUH tests all international
and immigrant students who have been newly admitted or are
returning to the university. The following exemptions from
EIL testing are granted upon presentation of appropriate
documentation: |

| 1. | Students who are native speakers of English. |
| 2. | Returning students who have previously completed their EIL requirements. |
| 3. | Returning students who have been away from the university
for less than a year. |
| 4. | Students who have a TOEFL score of 600 (CBT 250). |
| 5. | Students who have a TOEFL score of 550 with an accompanying TWE (Test of Written English) score of 5 or better. On the CBT (Computer Based TOEFL), this would be a score of 213 with an essay rating of 5 or better. |
| 6. | Students who have a score of 7 with no sub-test score below a 5.5 on the IELTS exam (British counterpart to the American TOEFL). |
| 7. | Students who have a score of 3 or higher on the APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language). |
| 8. | Students who have scores of 460 or better on the verbal section of the SAT (before April 1995) or 540 or better (after April 1995). |
| 9. | Students who have scores of 24 or higher on the English
portion of the ACT. |
| 10. | Students who transfer to BYUH with an AA degree from a college or university with whom BYUH has a transfer agreement. |
| 11. | Students who have completed Form 7 with a minimum of four subjects, one of which must be English, and who have scored a minimum of 50 in each subject, OR who have completed the Foundations year at the University of the South Pacific or the University Preliminary year at the National University of Samoa with a “C” average. |
| 12. | Students who have obtained the equivalent of 60 transferable semester credits including freshman English with a GPA of 2.0 or better OR who have obtained the equivalent of 30 transferable semester credits including freshman English with a GPA of 3.0 or better from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, or the United Kingdom. |
| 13. | Students who have completed 4 years of full-time schooling
with English as the language of instruction at the middle
school, high school, college, or university level in Australia,
New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, the United
Kingdom, or the United States. |
| 14. | Students who are visiting students in spring and/or
summer terms. |
| 15. | Students who are PCC interns from the PRC, are non-degree seeking, and are only on campus for 8-10 months. These students may elect to test and take EIL courses if they wish. |
