Placement Tests

New students are placed in appropriate classes according to their performance on the following tests: SLEP, Writing Sample, and Speaking.

SLEP
Part 1: Listening with a tape. Includes conversation, matching dialog with written text, matching descriptions with pictures, and map reading.

Part 2
: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar.

45 minutes each part
Writing
Sample

Students write on one prompt. Writing is scored according to the TWE (Test of Written English) Scale.

30 minutes
Speaking
The speaking test consists of 3-4 contextualized speaking tasks. Students are given directions for each task orally (by listening to a CD) and in writing. They are allowed a specified number of seconds to respond to each task. Each task is independently rated on a scale of 20-60. An EIL teacher administers the exam to each student and rates the student responses.
